 Response

The "Rule of Law" was thrown out the window in 2008 with "Too big to fail, too big to jail" where the principles behind blowing up the United States Economy and damn near destroying the world economy with toxic CDO's and CDS; no one of any significance went to jail. No indictments, no grand jury's, superficial legislative inquiries. SEC, IRS, FDIC, long neutered; Treasury expressing interests other than the public's by (self professed) Ann Rand acolytes. Quietly the judicial "Statue of limitations" has been run-out so the perpetrators walk, not only did not get banned from having anything to do with finance, they got bonuses, promotions, and government appointments. The "System" Works! Whose system?

The Banks own everything: Bernie Madoff turned himself in, he wasn't "caught" (something about Russian oligarch money?) Enron was a buy the day it folded. The stock market is manipulated by short sellers, and high speed computer micro trading. Economic fairy tales of "Free Markets" for fantastic fantasy "free trade" in the Neo-liberal financial world. To hell with Adam Smith! Lets modernize the worlds factories and then offshore US manufacturing (at taxpayer expense.)

FDR should have packed the supreme court, had the conspirators publicly tried and their assets seized and forfeited in the take over attempt by economic royalists exposed by Smedley Butler. We won the battles of WW2 but evidently lost the war against fascism. When Eisenhower downplayed the Oil oligarchs he forgot that as well as being small in number they were also thin skinned, vengeful, and incredibly wealthy; they immediately hooked up with the congressional-media-industrial military / prison complex. So here we are.

Its not only democracy that is under threat: it is the worlds financial system that is imperiled by "Black box" financial instruments, "offshoring" wealth, and generally the financial shenanigans that only the extremely wealthy and trans national corporations can get away with. Running America like a business! Into the Ground! This is Mammon worship: "by their fruits you shall know them".

Masks and mask mandates

IMHO: The framing employed in ‘government overreach anti-mask’ divisive politics is disingenuous, dangerous and counterproductive. No one is taking away your ‘freedoms’ (however that word is being defined by the particular rabble rouser or agitated citizen).

2 Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.

Put the blame where it actually belongs: The Virus, Covid19, and it’s variant mutations have achieved global pandemic status due to carelessness, hubris, incompetence, ignorance, arrogance, greed, mammon worship, and just plain stupidity. Covid19 has forced change in our personal public behaviors and interactions; here AND worldwide along with an ever increasing death toll.

If you are infected your cells are enslaved by the virus! Sickened or symptom free, you are spreading it around by the act of breathing, speaking, singing, yelling or any other form of opening your mouth and expelling air – it’s part of the virus life cycle and amounts to a unwitting random area wide physical assault or worse, deliberate reckless endangerment and wanton disregard.

Pathogens do not care about your race, sex, color, creed, beliefs, politics, or what you think. Disease thrives and multiplies in poverty, depravity, and ignorance. “We” are virus food and the RNA target for cellular enslavement transforming us into reproduction factories replicating covid (or notavirus, or rotovirus, or Influenza, or God-Only-Knows) to infect anyone else unfortunate enough to cross our path.  Virus is evolutionary, the Original Gangster posing the question: is this really alive or just a complex replicating organic molecule?, Virus do what virus gonna do. It is up to human beings to accommodate the Virus; an invisible predator whose sole purpose is to use you as virus kibble, home, and nursery.

It doesn't matter if you like it or not: distancing, controlling physical contact, personal airspace, and administrating vaccinations is the currant physical reality. There's only so many tricks in our pathogens threat response kit - we're not to isolation compounds and colonies - yet.

That is who, what, where, when, why and how societies governing structures are being forced to curtail your ability to be exploited by a virus allowing it to spread unchecked throughout the population. A mask is not a burka, it’s not a costume, not a disguise or a symbol. Mask's are not perfect, certainly not infallible but they are the only inexpensive preventative measure proven by centuries of actual use by professionals and refined by peer reviewed science, scalable to be distributed and used by the majority of the population.

Letter to OK Senator Langston on healthcare

As one of my State Senators I am begging you not to follow your Republican colleagues in this misguided attempt to undo the Affordable Care Act. All the Republican complaints about the Democratic Legislature’s maneuvering and manipulations appear mere projection by the single minded lemming like drive to railroad the repeal of "Obamacare" (and everything any Democratic President has accomplished).
I know it must have caused no end of consternation for Obama to have co-opted the Conservative Heritage Foundation's Insurance driven healthcare plan carefully crafted for the Republican Party; personally I am of the opinion that universal healthcare is the only viable option.

  • §  Disease and accidents do not care what race, color, creed, or social economic status a person is other than thriving in poverty
  • §  Matthew 25:40-45 'as you do unto the least among you so you have done to me.
  • §  The US Constitution Preamble 'Promote the general welfare' and Article 1, section 8 of the US Constitution (which you swore to uphold)
  • §  Adam Smith (father of Capitalism) "Theory of Moral Sentiments" ..only Barbarians abandon the young, aged, sick and infirm to be devoured by beasts or perish from exposure (my paraphrase).
  • §  Universal Healthcare would end a very large amount of lawsuits tying up the Judicial system as a great deal of suits ultimately boil down to "Who will pay for the Doctor / hospital bills" and would stimulate all sectors of business (with the notable exception of the Health Insurance Industry).
  • §  This country already practices the absolutely worse form of socialism by socializing the financial risks of banks: mortgage manipulation, derivatives traders ‘Collateralized debt obligations’ and Credit Default Swaps, using the taxpayer coffers to bail out banks and their associated institutions all while privatizing profits. With very few exceptions the Congress and particularly the Republican majority have enshrined “To big to fail” and the failure of the Legislature and Judiciary to break up the immense banks, reintroduce Glass Stiegel, and regulate the financial industry has doomed us to a catastrophic repeat of
  • §  Humans are social creatures that live in a society. It is dissembling at least to say Single Payer (Universal Healthcare) Medicare and Medicaid and Social Security; despite the fact the programs they are PUBLIC insurance programs (albeit woefully and purposely underfunded due to politically sanctioned income caps and interest income exclusions) are socialism when 'promote the general Welfare' immediately follows 'provide for the common defense' which proceeds 'establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility'.
  • §  Unfortunately, with few exceptions neither party is willing to confront Eisenhower's nightmare which continually devours ever increasing amounts of our Treasury despite the DOD inability to even perform a simple audit.  Because of my statement #1, it is arguable that at least some basic form of universal healthcare is part of ‘providing for the common defense'. You want people to have easy access to a doctor to detect and mitigate pandemics (my family lost relatives to the 1918 influenza pandemic). God only knows what could be spawned from genetic manipulation (Ala Steven Kings "The Stand").
  • §  Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid has nothing to do with the national debt (Reagan-Mondale 1984 debate). The programs are part of a PUBLIC INSURANCE PROGRAM. The only debate is in the lack of funding which would be solved by raising the Income cap and treating interest as income.
  • §  This is not a zero sum game. Unlike buying a MX Missile, monies distributed to the population via pensions, Social Security, SSI, Medicare, Medicaid go directly into the local economies. I will reiterate: Unlike monies accumulated by the 1%, public expenditures are not 'hoarded', the cash isn't stashed in concealed offshore accounts or used to covertly influence public policy.
  • §  What is the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches ultimate end game?  Dissolve the "Grand Experiment' in a Federated Representative Democracy in order to propagate a Plutocracy, Oligarchy, or Kleptocracy? It sure appears to me that the late Molly Ivans was correct in her observation  “ the Republicans don’t want to govern – they want to rule”.
  • §  I ask you - Is it the desire of the governing majority to increasingly impoverish the population and drive those at the bottom into grinding 3rd world destitution while giving military adventurism abroad (and the “defense” contractors behind it) a blank check while turning  the entire country into a ‘One Party State” (like communist China or the USSR)? As Benjamin Franklin so aptly noted "Those who would trade essential liberties for security will deserve neither nor obtain either."
  • §  I dare say History will not be kind to those public officials who promote iand propagate foreign entanglements and military adventurism while not only ignoring but actively encouraging the impoverishment of the US Citizenry.
  • Healthcare is a right not a privilege unless you intend to amend the bill of rights with “You have the right to be hopeless, helpless and suffer from mental and physically illness.
  • I hope my words have some effect on your policy position but I fear you will continue to favor expediency, Ideology and demagoguery over sound and thoughtful governance.

Progressives don't hate the fact the stock market is up and the economy is improving.

 Progressives "hate that" (0+ / 0-)
wrong! it is the systemic problems underneath that have not been addressed. The financial derivatives: black holes that are not subject to disclosure. The failures to maintain chain of custody on property deeds, the falsified notaries, and deceitful discovery behind the foreclosure crises. The failure to hold the credit ratings agencies accountable.
Never mind jailed: less then a handful and none of the principles were even indited for blowing up the worlds economy with financial explosive devices of market destruction.
High speed tax free computer autonomic stock trading, Credit default swaps and offshore tax havens are not available or part of reality for the 90%.
It is "Gotcha"Capitalism that has progressives as myself so riled. We can't seem to make money in this society ethos just by providing a service or product: No; we've got to trick you! Tripwire penalties and punishing fees for ordinary consumers. Late a day? Too Bad! If you can't buy out the competition, crush them! The only rule is "don't get caught".
As my mothers Trust Officer candidly conceded: "We don't know what AAA means; we know what it's suppose to mean, we know what they say it means, but we can only trust that which we can do our own do diligence".
And speaking of 'Trusts', that constant 1% Treasury rate has pretty much destroyed mom's money. The trust can't engage in stock speculation so as the interest rate declined below her standard of living so did her standard decline AND the principle shrinks. Social Security will be all that's left after this next year.
Everything costs more (the consumer price index is a statistical lie); the financial chickens of the Afghanistan / Iraq military adventurism coupled with tax cuts are coming home to roost. To my knowledge never in history has a nation gone to war, borrowed the money from foreign 3rd parties AND then cut taxes on the wealthy!
There is no compartmentalization in the US financial industry: To many shopping centers without customers, to many office buildings without leasers, and too many housing additions with the owners either foreclosed, underwater, or not even sold. The worst offensives are not even illegal: congress and the mantra of "deregulation" saw to that!
It's the final market correction and world wide reckoning that has me worried. It's the underlying soundness of the Insurance industries reserves (what ever happened t those S&L TARP properties: the Penn square $6M weed encrusted lot is still a $600K weed encrusted lotin eyesight of the OKC capital building).
I question the fundamental soundness of the worlds economy and the United States in particular. The best prediction I have seen is a more complete collapse somewhere around 2015-2016 (dependent on any corrective measure being introduced). It would be interesting to see how this turns out 2 generations from now.

Immigrant

It is absolute bovine manure that every immigrant takes a job from a US citizen. It is beyond asinine to purport that 57,000 (500,000 or even 5,000,000) refugee children represent a threat or burden to this once great nation. It certainly isn't Christian to meet refugees (children at that!) with derogatory signs, hate speech and naked fear mongering!

The immigrant serves as the strawman argument of diversionary propaganda that hides the loss of our jobs by the neo-liberal financial theory exemplified by GATT's,NAFTA, CAFTA and other so called "free trade" agreements. These "trade" agreements have arguably done as great or greater economical damage to the countries of Central and Southern American as well as our immediate neighbor Mexico then our own self inflicted wounds and certainly have exacerbated the situation in these countries along with our overt and covert political meddling.

Capitalism (free movement of capital) monetary policy is conflated with the Free Enterprise system that this country was based on. In light of the perversion of economic policy from the original capital as quantified in Adam Smiths Wealth of Nations, by the financial interests that have devalued our currency and the institutions of our society, we can hardly even call ourselves capitalistic.

Democracy (or Federalism if you will) does not equate with capitalism; the two often are mutually exclusive. Government cannot be run as a business; the goals and outcomes of the two are not the same.

Despite the musings of the Mises institute; There is no such thing as a "free market" or "Free trade": they are ideals (like Aristotle's crystal spheres or Platos perfect mirror world).

We are a nation of immigrants; the ant-immigrant meme serves to pit "us against them" while the banksters and those who hide in the shadows wielding the true power laugh all the way to the bank.

Once upon a time. (Appearence of Impropriety rewrite)

Once upon a time phrases like “the appearance of impropriety” or “potential conflict of interest” was enough to cause apoplectic shock, resignations, terminations and investigations by Justice and the FBI. Trust was something both business and government garnered and guarded. Of course, once upon a time, what was good for the nation was more important than political power, national news actually engaged in investigative reporting, and men walked on the moon.

Whether actually engaged in the CDO (Collateralized Debt Obligation) market or not, no one trusts any of the ratings agencies. The AAA investment rating has become meaningless and thus worthless. I know what AAA SUPPOSEDLY means; I know what Moody, S&P, etc proclaims the rating to mean. But what the AAA rating has come to mean to me: less than nothing – a bad bet – I’ve got better odds at the local Indian Casino.

There is no trust in the market by us mere mortals as government deregulation has begotten anarchy. It’s the S&L debacle all over again, brought to us by the same Voodoo economic ideology! Until congress actually legislates directly to the ratings agencies conflicts of interest (which isn’t going to happen as long as the obstructionist Republican and Democratic Wall Street Sycophant’s prevail in the legislature), we mere mortals cannot tell what the difference is between Junk bonds, penny stocks, and AAA.

Between lovely lip service and opposition parties’ obstructionism, the Congress, the Executive branch, and the Judiciary have done nothing to change the perception of mass collusion. The fact that the former and present head of Treasury, the former and present Chairman of the Federal Reserve, and the former and this Presidents chief economic advisers were all former employees of one of the principle financial institutions in the middle of our financial debacle lends no confidence or credence to any proposed solutions.

Anyone and everyone involved with the propagation of unregulated CDO’s, Derivatives, Credit Default Swaps, and the rest of the Exotic Financial Instruments have no business being anywhere in government this side of a Congressional Subpoena or Grand Jury investigation! These unindicted career criminals should not be allowed to run a check cashing store, much less major financial institutions; their involvement in this debacle should be a mark of shame. The economy cannot be repaired until the market fundamentals are restored and one can’t get much more fundamental then basic trust in investment ratings.

Unfortunately, current and former members of congress have immunity from acts of legislative malfeasance, greed and incompetence. Corporate broadcast media are unwilling or incapable of performing simple Lexus/Nexus, library of congress, and Cspan searches that run contrary to their owner’s ideology. Blatant conflicts of interest are downplayed if not outright ignored by the media and Justice as former legislatures and regulators morph from government service and political office to industry insider and from corporate lobbyist into regulator and government official. Same as it always was. Caveat emptor.*

Public perception be damned! The contrived memory hole selectively disposes any correlation between legislative sponsorship and the eventual intended and unintended consequences. “No rules” is the literal definition of anarchy and anyone who is crying "deregulation" is not "conservative"; they are anarchists and profiteers; Confidence men setting up the Marks for fleecing.

"Free markets" and “Free Trade” are unobtainable Ideals like Plato’s perfect mirror world, "true democracy" or Aristotelian Crystal spheres; great for economic academia but limited in practical reality. Faith in free market and free trade solutions are to mammon worship as the Immaculate Conception and the Resurrection are to Christianity; yet even the most ardent fundamentalist do not step in front of a bus and expect God to save them from the laws of physics. Unlike the proverbial bus “Market Corrections” are almost never immediate, are completely amoral, and thus can ultimately entail the demise of millions of lives.

I fail to see how it is in our strategic national interest to systematically dismantle our manufacturing base. Cowabunga Man! No rules** may be great for Skateboarding and Extreme Skiing but it hardly is a bases for trust in financial instruments (oh that’s right; it’s all “free market”. Just like the Madoff and Stanford funds until the ponzi aspect was revealed.

How can one claim to adhere to Adam Smith’s "hidden hand" Capitalism, yet throw away Smith’s (paraphrase) ‘manufacturing is the only form of true wealth’? Does anyone else remember “Representative” Ginrich waving around Toffler’s 3rd Wave on the House floor pontificating as how we were going to all become “Knowledge workers” as justification for off-shoring American manufacturing? Newt’s knowledge worker still requires 1st wave Agricultural and 2nd wave Industrial (manufacturing) to support Toffler’s 3rd wave Information age!

All the biznes reporters, Wall Street insiders, corporate and guberment propagandists can plant stories day in and out how “the recession is over”. Yeah, Right. And until it collapsed Enron was a Great Buy. Congress never did fix all the Enron loopholes.

The thing we most need to come to grips with as a nation is that democracy*** and capitalism are not the same thing. In fact the two can be and often are mutually exclusive. Capitalism itself is not ubiquitous; there exist many forms besides the “gotcha” predatory destructive form advocated by the Milton Friedman Chicago School of Voodoo economics and so aptly portrayed by Gordon Gekko.

For US manufacturing to recover we must revisit the US trade treaties; in particular the 1990’s arguments for externalization of costs associated with environmental pollution, labor exploitation, resource depletion, lack of infrastructure, and authoritarian rule. Granted much of these externalized costs are intangible and difficult to quantify (thus the drive to externalize) but not including such costs creates a false metric for Comparative advantage. That “giant sucking sound” has proven to be a valid and prophetic observation; “fair trade, not free trade”.

Main street is beyond angry; around here many of us suburbanites are in what could be more aptly described as a quiet rage. There are individuals that have done more damage to our country and society then ALL OF THE STREET CRIME COMBINED (including drugs), yet to date none have been held accountable and the principles have even collected Bonuses!

The problem is exemplified by the corporate financed Tea Party; the participants know something’s basically wrong but they can’t put their finger on just who and what are to blame. The Rightwing take advantage of misinformation and propaganda to both scapegoat the liberals and progressive movement by projecting their own desires and guilt. Bonuses for billionaires who did more economic damage than all the terrorists in the world combined! If there was any justice in the world these "geniuses" including past and present House, Senate, and Judiciary should be arrested for conspiracy, economic treason and continuing criminal enterprise; frog marched out of their estates handcuffed in their underwear!

Truly the big thieves hang the little ones: interesting times indeed!

*Latin for “Let the buyer beware”.

**Physics and the law of gravity still haven’t been repealed – they are self enforcing and tend to apply their consequences immediately.

***or federated constitutional representative government with democratically elected executive and legislatures for the semantic nitpickers

US Economic Downturn

Like Christ’s Immaculate Conception and the Resurrection, “Free Trade” and “free markets” are articles of faith for mammon worship. They are unobtainable ideals like Plato’s “perfect” world or “true” democracy.

It was in the Reagan “revolution” when the wisdom of Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations admonition that “Manufacturing is the only form of true wealth” was discarded. I still remember “Representative” Newt Ginrich waving around Toffler’s 3rd Wave on the House floor pontificating as how we were going to all become “Knowledge workers” as justification for off-shoring American manufacturing. It is interesting and instructive how the media has conveniently forgotten his role in this debacle and still allow him to babble on the airwaves.

The idea of fully funded pensions was tossed out with T Boone Pickens attempt and Armen Hammer’s successful takeover of Cities Service Oil & Gas. Prior to the 1978 Cities Service takeover, the entire companies employees; CEO, CFO and Pension Fund managers; white collar and blue-collar employees were all vested in the pension. There existed a tacit company agreement with the employees that any excess funds in the pension would be seen in the individual retirements. All of that went out the window when, instead of placing protections on workers pensions, congress allowed companies to under fund their pensions to only a small percentage of contribution or do away with them entirely in favor of 401K’s. With the demise of the company wide pension came the special pensions for the top corporate echelons and the gulf exploded between what was good for the company long term verses the short term top executives interest.

Naturally the “run-government-like-a-business-crowd” (RGLaBC) jumped on the short changing pension bandwagon so we now find most of the public sector pensions for school teachers, police, fire, state and city workers if not outright failing seriously in trouble. Naturally the RGLaBC people blame the Unions rather then themselves or the “tax cut” something-for-nothing politicians.

Prior to the 1989 “Tax Reform Act” business had an incentive to hire full time employees as they were required to offer Temps the same benefits as the company “full time” staff if they worked over 35 hours a week. It was with the HW Bush’s signature that the definitions of Temporary employees and tax rules were changed in response to heavy lobbying and political donations from Manpower Inc, all in the name of “free markets” and “Global competition”. Business quickly took advantage and the phenomenon of ghost companies where temps staffed the majority of a organization was established.

The first and final nail in our economy has come from the Milton Friedman, Republican / Libertarian anarchists who preach, “deregulation” as the cure to our corporate and economic ills. You would think the savings and loan debacle would have provided a sufficient lesson, and you would be wrong.

Like any good confidence swindle, deregulation sets up the marks for fleecing – everyone of the RBLaBC feigns shock, shock that corporations would take advantage in the lack of regulations and pin the blame on “bad apples” or the few remaining overwhelmed regulators that escaped the “small government” knife.

From Penn Square/Lincoln savings and loan, thru Global Crossing and Enron, to AIG, CitiGroup, Goldman, BoA and the rest – the media ignore the past and doom another generation to relive it. We sheeple keep listening to the Mammon worshiping RBLaBC (yeah, into the ground) siren song of “Tax cuts for the Wealthy” at the expense of everyone else and the corporate right wing media (like the Wall Street journal) marginalize the voices of reason like Brooke Born and Elizabeth Warren.

The thing we most need to come to grips with as a nation is that democracy (or federated representative if you want to nit pick) and capitalism are not the same thing. In fact the two can be and often are mutually exclusive. Capitalism itself is not ubiquitous, there exist many forms besides the “gotcha” predatory destructive form advocated by the Milton Friedman Chicago School of economics.

Nationalize Healthcare

3/10/03 9:42 AM

A case for Nationalization of Primary Healthcare based on National Security
An Outline by David Donnell
(Social Liberal, Fiscal Moderate, Constitutional Conservative)

I would like to present a bold idea to our “leadership” that would address many pressing problems in American Society.

Nationalize primary healthcare on the bases of National Security.

I) Why National Security?

A) One of the greatest potential threats to the general population of the United States is a clandestine attack by radioactive, biological, or chemical (NBC) suicide terrorist on civilian population(s).
1) Such attacks can have a significant time delay between event and symptoms.
2) Attack events might only be detected by emergency and primary care facilities.

B) Of the 3 forms of clandestine attack, the Biological type has the greatest future to cause the greatest long-term havoc.
1) Whereas radioactive and chemical attack requires access and usage of restricted (tracked) materials and are of known properties, biological do not.
2) The advent of genetic engineering: DNA sequencing of the human, animal, plant, bacterial, and viral genomes.
a) Completely novel genetic sequences have been created[1] (a chimera) that (worse case) the entire world population would have no natural resistance and (potentially) 100% infection rate.
3) Emergency and primary care workers would bare the brunt of a surreptitious attack that potentially could potentially collapse the entire medical system of an afflicted region.
a) It is not hard to imagine that a regional collapse could further spread and become a pandemic requiring extreme measures.
b) Of the known suitable infectious agents, almost all initially present as a bad cold or flu.
c) The flu can of itself become pandemic (despite vaccinations).

C) There are only 2 methods to directly deal with a biological attack on an unprotected population.
1) IMMEADIATE Medical response by vaccinations, antibiotics, antiviral, and antigens with isolation and support therapies.
a) On the spot diagnoses of infectious agent, natural or otherwise and appropriate treatment.
(i) Diagnoses of virus genomes require expensive laboratory work not normally performed except under extreme conditions.
b) Competition exists in some vaccines while others are single source subject to price manipulation or elimination if the facility closes due to economics
c) The problem dovetails into the antibiotic overuse by the agricultural industry.
2) Quarantine by civil and/or military authorities.

D) Nationalizing primary care would further unify the existing programs of the CDC and Homeland Defense and enhance the effectiveness.
1) Nationalizing primary care would save taxpayer money by including biological defense spending into healthcare.
2) This would unify part of the DOD and DOHS healthcare budget with the civilian agency (Medicaid etc.), appropriations.
3) This would address the homeland security state funding issues for first responders: Ambulance, fire, police, Emergency rooms, clinics and primary care physicians.

II) Why Nationalize primary healthcare?

A) Healthcare is on the verge of a total meltdown. Healthcare is the number one employment issue for business AND Government.
1) The private health insurance, HMO, and managed care industry is failing to protect a vast and growing segment of population.
a)People in the margins of society under the currant insurance industry driven healthcare system, would delay seeking help in an epidemic, with extreme negative consequences
2) The population without health insurance defaults to public sector (taxpayer) Medicare, Medicaid, Veterans Administration, as care is required.

B) Healthcare is the number one economic drag on low and middle-income finances.
1) For many segments of society, the life span is already diminishing!

C) Healthcare is the single most expensive part of retirement.
1) The needs for the social medical system is exploding as the uninsured Baby boomers age

D) The malpractice insurance and health insurance system is out of control and showing meltdown.
1) Patients blame a greedy Insurance Industry, greedy and Incompetent Doctors, greedy Tort Lawyers and a profiteering pharmaceuticals industry.
2) Doctors blame greedy Tort Lawyers, unrealistic Patient expectations, profiteering pharmaceuticals industry, and greedy Insurance industry making up for stock losses.
3) The Insurance Industry blames excessive jury awards to frivolous suits authored by greedy Tort Lawyers, Incompetent Doctors, profiteering pharmaceuticals industry, unrealistic Patient expectations, and stock losses.
4) Tort Lawyers blame incompetent Doctors, profiteering Pharmaceutical Industries and a greedy Insurance Industry making up for stock losses; “frivolous” patient lawsuits are a matter of perspective and who is suing.
5) The Pharmaceuticals Industry blames greedy Tort Lawyers, Incompetent Doctors, unrealistic patient outcomes, miserly Insurance and Government reimbursements, FDA regulations, research and development costs, and stock losses.
6) Any way you look at it; taxpayers pay and only the lawyers profit.

III) The alternative to Nationalization would be taxpayers bailing out the medical Insurance Industry.

A) That would be tantamount to socializing medical cost without actually socializing medical care – the worst of all worlds!
1) Allowing the social medical system to collapse would conceivably lead to people dying on the streets. That would not be conducive to insuring “domestic tranquility”.

B) Vaccinations are a particular area of special concern:
1) Pharmaceutical Industry has at times failed to provide or maintain adequate stocks of Tetanus, Flu, Pneumonia, DPT, Measles, etc.
a) Lack of profit margins from standard vaccinations where competition does exist.
b) Fear potential lawsuit liability for new vaccines and problematic vaccines with high negative patient outcomes.
c) Failure by industry to research new vaccines for existing disease and emerging 3rd world diseases.
d) A great deal of vaccine research is performed by publicly funded University research and yet claimed as overhead by pharmaceuticals industry.
e) Pharmaceutical Industry has at times failed to provide or maintain adequate stocks (or control) of antibiotics, antiviral, and antifungal medications.
f) By removing vaccination, antibiotic, and antiviral from the “free market” research efforts could be streamlined and treatments of emerging diseases more quickly addressed.

IV) The government is responsible for the present healthcare situation because:

A) It has failed to address the fundamental problems of healthcare throughout the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s.
1) The Insurance Industry is allowed by legislative faint to move claims losses between Home, Auto, Property, Casualty, Malpractice, and Medical Divisions.
2) The Insurance Industry Is allowed to recoup stock losses from ratepayers.
3) Congress made a bad problem worse by ignoring consequences of the 1989 Tax “Reform Act”.
a) Temporary agencies are not required to offer medical or retirement.
b) The Insurance Industry has failed to allow Temporary employees, part time, and self employed to form groups.
c) Congress has not forced the Insurance Industry to allow temporary, part time, and self employed to form groups to negotiate Health Insurance, Pensions, and Retirements. (Unlike the State and Federal Legislature & Judicial Health plans)

B) Federal, State, Local governments jumped on the non-benefited “Temp” bandwagon to avoid hiring freezes and lessen exposure to pension obligations and additional healthcare.
1) It is particularly ironic as this ultimately shoves the retirement and healthcare costs back into the social services – just as business is doing. Even more poignant is the fact elected officials are themselves “temporary workers” in every sense.

C) Government has allowed the pharmaceutical industry to act as individual monopolies for necessary “sole source” drugs, granting dubious new patents on existing drugs that industry has repackaged
1) Pharmaceuticals that have reached the end of their patents should retire to the public domain.
2) Pharmaceuticals discovered by government paid university research belong to the American public and should be licensed for manufacture accordingly. The pharmaceutical industry should not be allowed to claim taxpayer funded research and studies in its pricing structure.
3) Public advertisements for pharmaceuticals should be curtailed (if not outright banned). Prescription Drugs should not require public marketing as only Doctors can prescribe them. Certainly, the cost of such marketing should not be passed to the public in the form of higher prices.
4) Congress has failed to address profiteering of the insurance, pharmaceutical, and healthcare industry choosing business interests over the publics even as they enjoy lavish congressional health plans.
5) Vaccines, public vaccinations, and vaccine research must be recognized as an integral part of National defense. Adverse reactions and negative outcomes should be removed from courts (unless criminally negligent & particularly egregious) and covered by Medicaid.

D) Rationing healthcare already exists under pay or suffer and die.
1) This leaves large segments of society particularly vulnerable to creating a major epicenter for a biological assault.

E) Drug Addiction Is a Medical Problem: Detoxification and Treatment should be available upon demand.
1) When hard[2] drug addicts are finally willing to seek inpatient treatment, there is a limited window of opportunity before the addiction takes control again.
a) Treatment must be as available as the drugs society is trying to rid itself of.
b) Waiting lists do not serve the interests of communities or save government coffers
c) The only question to an addict seeking help should be: “may we send a car to give you a ride?”
d) Mental healthcare must also be employed with drug addicts, as many have underlying thought disorders, mental illness, and trauma that must be alleviated to prevent relapse and recidivism.
(i)Length of inpatient treatment often requires more then standard 28 day insurance benefit.

F) Failure to promptly treat hard drug addiction thru readily available treatment, either voluntary or forced, passes (and magnifies) the cost into the Criminal Justice system and social services (children, spouses of incarcerated).
1) Active (hard drug) addicts continue to cost society in the form of personal and property crimes to pay for their addiction, and when caught: cost of a trial and incarceration. ($28k/yr - min Security to $52k/yr - Max Security in Oklahoma).
2) Closing mental hospitals, restricting access to mental health care, unwillingness to pay the psychiatric medical practitioners and facilities has created a crisis swelling the streets, jails and prisons.
3) This not only fails to serve the public’s interest, it fails to save the public’s tax dollars as the cost is merely shifted (and increased) in the form of judicial proceedings, personal and property crimes, and incarcerations.

V) The only other Industrialized country besides the United States without a comprehensive social medical plan is South Africa.

A) The Insurance Industry/HMO/PPO has been allowed to manipulate and control the medical system to their benefit at the expense of the general population.
1) The present privatized Healthcare system is based of the concept of profiting off individuals misfortune.
a) Generally, the sicker people are the less money they have to pay for it.
2) The present privatized Healthcare system puts the onus of insurance claims between laboratory, x-ray, diagnostics, on the patient who many times is too sick to be able to function or care.
3) There is something intrinsically wrong with a healthcare system where the first question asked of a patient is “How do you intend to pay” rather then “what’s wrong”. Many Specialty Doctors offices now require the patient to pay the entire office visit fee “up front” and force the afflicted patient to negotiate with the insurance company for reimbursement.

B) There will be economic losers in the future from this problem
1) If things continue unchanged: the healthcare system will eventually implode leaving Medical Insurance Industry/HMO bankrupt and seeking taxpayer bailouts.
2) The Medical Insurance Industry/HMO can be seen as a modern equivalent of the proverbial “Buggy Whip” manufacturers.
3) Hillary Clinton was vilified for addressing healthcare reform without inviting the Insurance Industry. As a major root cause, She was right to exclude the relatively small amount of people employed in the Medical Insurance industry compared to the effected population the Medical Industry is feeding on.

C) This is not ignoring capitalism or competition - There will always be Private care, the extremely wealthy can always “spare no expense”.
1) There will always be a market for elective surgeries, private “high end” care, cosmetic surgery, extreme measures, and experimental care.

D) Pharmaceuticals manufacturers will still compete with their counterparts – both American and abroad for the latest and greatest medications. The US industry needs to follow their foreign counterparts like the Swiss, French, Scandinavian, British, et al. The foreign drug manufacturers manage to exist and create a profit even under socialized medicine: must be doing something right.

VI) In Conclusion: Something has to be done, the multitude of problems will not go away by themselves, even as individual people eventually do. Only the federal government has the power to step in where the States and Industries have failed, unify the healthcare system, and provide at least minimal care to everyone – if not for altruism then enlightened self-interest. Diseases do not honor governmental borders, socio-economic status, political affiliations, religion, or ideology. This is the governments constitutional business and responsibility falling under the provisions of “preserving domestic tranquility” and “promoting the General welfare” “with freedom and Justice for All”.

[2] I make the distinction between “Hard” addictive substances: Opiates, Cocaine, Crack, MethAmphetamine, Valium where withdrawal symptoms entails dramatic and overwhelming physical “illness” (occasionally fatal) that reinforces the addicts desire to feel “well” no matter the cost (or crime). The so-called “Soft” addictive substances: Caffeine, Nicotine, Marijuana, etc. that do not manifest an overpowering physical inducement component to the Addiction (more mental then physical). The Reagan administration moved Marijuana from its own status to Schedule 1 (the same as Heroin – no known medical or industrial use).

Tulsa LightRail

Dear Mayor Taylor,

While I applaud your message I feel you have ignored one major capital improvement: light rail.

It is (past) time to seriously begin the planning and debate for a mass transit system, independent from the freight rail system, to tie together the outlying suburbs of the Tulsa Metroplex.

Never mind the debate on peak oil: even if we all start driving hybrids, electrics, hydrogen etc. the city will still become gridlocked as the population swells. We can't build or maintain enough roads to accommodate future population projections for this area.

With the Stadium underway and, in particular, the Arkansas River development discussions: what do you do about parking. How do people arrive and depart?

The plans have been on the books since the 70's for a rail service between Tulsa and Broken Arrow.

Think of the economic impact if there was a dependable rail system between Tulsa, BA, Jenks, Bixby, Sapulpa, Sand Springs, Owasso. Maybe even Glenpool, Inola, Coweta, Collinsville, Bartlesville!

Think if such a local rail system was then connected to a high speed rail(maybe even maglev) between Tulsa and OKC.

From what I understand OKC has been (and still is) working on a highspeed rail between Dallas and OKC.

Please start the public dialog about our transportation needs for the next century. Monorail? Bullet Train? Maybe we should seriously think about underground tunnels, avoiding a lot of right-of-way condemnation of neighborhoods. At least the idea needs to be articulated to the public.

Such a project would be too big for any company or local government; I think we need to be discussing something along the line of a public utility.

At least the idea is worth public mention.
